Bones are moved by muscles

A joint is made of two bones or three, which are wrapped and fastened together by soft tissues like membranes, ligaments and tendons. There is a tiny space between the bones filled with fluid for lubricating, shock absorbing, and delivering nutrition to the joint.

There are three factors that can cause knee joint problems; autoimmune diseases, pathogens, and overuse of the join. Overuse of the joint is the major cause of joint problems. Overuse includes degeneration (aging), trauma (accidents), and improper heavy use of the joints (running).

Except for trauma, most overused joint problems are caused by the unbalanced tension of muscles and tendons or ligaments. This imbalance makes the bones touch each other and then the cartilage wears off on top of each bone.  After the cartilage has been damaged, joint problems begin.

Most people who have overused joint problems don’t know how to take care of their joints. They even accept wrong suggestions about the care of their joints from medical care professionals.  For example, patients with  knee joint problem with cartilage damage are still maintained on their cardiovascular exercises, accompanied by taking pain killers.

In clinic, I have seen many patients with joint problems who are runners or athletes and suffering with knee joint problems but still maintaining their exercises. They are waiting to receive artificial joints!  I always ask those patents if they have seen tigers or lions running after their meals to maintain their running speed or if they have seen bears doing weight lifting exercise to maintain their big muscles?

Since unbalanced muscle tension causes joint problems, it is necessary to treat the muscles and tendons first. Of course, if the joint is inflamed, we need to care for that too. To care for overused joint problems, acupuncture with a massage therapy is the best choice, accompaning it with yong kong® exercise.

We all need to practice Yong Kong® to reduce stress

September 2nd, 2010 Steve Chang Comments off

Yong Kong® is an innovative exercise, which is created and developed by me based on the principle of Tai Ji (Tai Chi) and Qi Kong exercises, the structure of human anatomy, and the philosophy of Dao (Tao).  Practicing Yong Kong® enhances the elastic of muscular structure, promotes all circulations of body, and maintains the balance of body and spirit.  Yong Kong® is one of the treatment methods I use to treat patients.  Not only is Yong Kong® used to treat health conditions, but also used to treat hidden health conditions.

Stress is Number One killer to our health.  When our bodies are suffering stress or pressure, either physically or mentally, short term or long term, our bodies will response automatically to that stimulation by changing the balanced conditions, especially in our endocrine system and in the neurotransmitters in our neuromuscular system.  When the changes are significant enough,  whether acute or chronic, the imbalances in our system will eventually affect our bodies’ structures and functions and cause disharmony, problems, or illnesses like tiredness, muscular soreness, post-traumatize stress disease (PTSD), insomnia, cancers, low back pain, hypertension, depression, Type II diabetes, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), etc.

Practicing Yong Kong® relaxes the body’s neuromuscular system from head to toes, which in turn smoothes the flow of the body’s circulation, and soothes the mind of body.  When the endocrines and the neuromuscular system conditions are changed due to stress or pressure, we need to reverse the stress condition as early as possible by consuming or burning out the extra endocrines or neurotransmitters.  In nature, when a lucky prey survives an attack, it will hide in a safe place and tremble to release, or burn out the extra endocrines or neurotransmitters.

Yong Kong® exercise, through its unique way of practicing, the slow speed of moving, and the natural sequence of forms, can calm the mind, repair the body, and then energize the body.

Cholesterol

Anatomy of the biliary tree, liver and gall bl...

Cholesterol is essential to our body.  Cholesterol in our body comes from two sources.  Cholesterol is generated from our livers and also comes from our mouth – from what we eat.  Our livers can generate enough cholesterol for our body’s needs, even if we don’t eat any foods with cholesterol.  If we have so-called “high bad cholesterol” and we can’t control our eating, our physicians will prescribe medicines to suppress our liver from generating cholesterol.

The liver provides multiple functions to our body.  One is generating cholesterol; another is storing extra serum glucose (sugar) from our blood stream.  In order to lower “bad cholesterol”, we take medicines to suppress our livers from generating cholesterol.  When we say to suppress, it means we intend to disturb our liver’s generating function.  This is the reason why we need to have a blood test every three months to make sure our livers are still healthy if we take medicines to lower bad cholesterol.

Once the generating function of the liver is disturbed, will its storing function also be disturbed?  Most diabetic patients have high bad cholesterol.  Diabetes is the problem of storing blood glucose from blood stream into our body (livers are the important organ to store glucose). To control high bad cholesterol and high blood glucose, most physicians will prescribe two medicines for their patients, one for cholesterol, and one for blood glucose.  If liver function is disturbed in order to lower cholesterol, what happens to the blood glucose?  That is why the result of taking medicines is hardly satisfactory and the patients are suffering.

Since diabetes and high bad cholesterol are related to diet, how to eat right is one of the crucial solutions to reducing bad cholesterol.  Maintaining a proper exercise routine will also benefit the diabetes and high bad cholesterol.  I stopped taking medicines for diabetes and high bad cholesterol three years ago.

Controlling your normal blood sugar level without taking medicines

April 27th, 2010 Steve Chang Comments off

What is a normal blood sugar level?

A normal blood sugar level is the averaged blood sugar level most of healthy people will reach after taking a meal within a certain time.  After taking a meal, the blood sugar level will increase to a higher level.  At this point, insulin will be released to help absorb the blood sugar into the body for future energy sources.

A diabetic patient (Type II) has a problem decreasing the high blood sugar level after a meal to a normal level within a certain time.  The reason could be insulin deficiency or insulin resistance.

Two key points to control your blood sugar

Without taking a meal, will blood sugar increase to above the normal blood sugar level?  So, the first key point to control blood sugar level is to control your meals intake.  How to eat right is a very important topic, which I will discuss later.

The second key point to control your blood sugar level is the time the body needs to absorb sugar.  If your body needs six hours compared to other people’s two hours to absorb sugar and bring your blood sugar to a normal level, give your body six hours to do it’s job.

Most diabetics eat at a fixed time frame.  If they don’t eat in this pattern or even if skip a meal, they might experience hypoglycemic symptoms (due to blood sugar too low for body to tolerate).  One of the reasons for this situation is because of taking diabetic medicines.  That is why most diabetics are educated to eat regularly.  But they forgot one thing.  Every patient’s condition is different.  Every one has different time the body needs to absorb sugar.  Maybe when taking next meal, the body blood sugar level is still high.  That is why blood sugar control never works satisfactorily, even while taking diabetic medicines.

How to eat?

Eat a balanced diet, which means eat a variety of foods, more veggies and fruits, more vegetable protein than animal protein, and avoid simple carbohydrate foods. The quantity of food intake is also important.  Don’t forget your body needs time to absorb.  Don’t let the variation of your blood sugar level change dramatically.  This principle applies to all people.  Large fluctuations of your blood sugar level will stress your body more, which in turn will damage your body and make the control of your body sugar level more difficult.

Other factors affecting your blood sugar level

Stress is the number one enemy to your health.  Your body needs energy to handle stress.  Where does the energy come from?  Energy comes from the release of sugars from our body into blood, which means an increase in your blood sugar level.  How to manage stress is also an important topic, which I will discuss in a future post.

Proper exercise helps to maintain your body’s condition and helps your body function well.  Exercise consumes energy, which helps to lower your blood sugar level.  What is a proper exercise? How to exercise properly?  The answers to these questions vary.  It depends on the person’s current physical condition.

Following the above guidance not only will help to control blood sugar level, but will also decrease over-weight problems.  I stopped taking medicine for diabetes three years ago.

Following the Mother Nature Dao (Tao)

Five Elements

Five Yuns and Six Qis

Through observation, ancient Chinese learned that every thing in the Universe including the Universe itself could be described by using five elements, which are called Mental, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth.  These five elements constitute the Universe and they are interacting to each other. The relationship between these five elements forms the Five Elements Theory.  These five elements are also called five Yuns in the Constitution Theory of the Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM).  Yun in Chinese means changing, moving, and continuing.

The Earth is part of the Universe.  Besides influenced by the five Yuns, the Earth is also influenced by six climates, which are called Jue Yin (Wind), Shao Yin (Fire), Shao Yang (Heat), Tai Yin (Damp), Yang Ming (Dry), Tai Yang (Cold).  These six climates are related to the temperature variation on the Earth due to the influence of the Universe.  These six climates are called six Qis in the Constitution Theory.

Since people live on the Earth, all the influences to the Universe and the Earth are also affected to the people.  From the philosophy of Five Yuns and Six Qis, the theory of Heaven Stems and Earth Branches has been developed to describe the health of people and to predict the future of people.

A Normal Constitution

From a point of western medicine, a constitution can be described as a person’s anatomy and physiology.  The anatomy is referring to the body of a person.  This body is described as Yin in Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM).  TCM is following the principles of Dao. The physiology is referring to the functions, of which the body performs.  The performance of the functions is based on the condition of the body.  This performance is described as Yang in TCM.  Without Yin, there will be no Yang available.  Without Yang, there will be no Yin.  Yin and Yang need to exist concurrently and supplement to each other mutually.

A normal constitution is when Yin and Yang can work together and can function in its optimal condition.  This optimal condition needs to follow the rules of nature, which is Dao.  Without following Dao, there is no optimal condition of Yin and Yang and a normal constitution cannot be existed.

How was Yin and Yang started originated?  Before discuss this question, we need to understand a concept of non-existence and existence of material.  The non-existence of material will be discussed later.  After the development of non-existence to existence of material, a mess of cloud is formed.  This cloud consists different kinds of elements and the cloud is called Tai Ji in Daoism.  The elements in the Tai Ji are interactive collided and responded to each other, which produces new elements (Yin) and new performance (Yang).

Once Yin and Yang revolved, simple structure was formed.  Through the continuing of revolving, a living organism was created.  This living organism was equipped with ability to growth, to maintain, and to reproduce.  A living world started.

A living organism was created and developed under Dao.  To continue exist, a living organism needs constantly to follow Dao.  Dao is not constantly unchanged.  Dao is constantly changing in an unpredictable way but still is Dao.  All living organisms need to follow Dao to live.

What is a normal constitution of a living organism?  There is no absolutely normal or abnormal constitution.  A Dao following constitution is a normal constitution.

The Formation of a Constitution

Since a normal constitution is one that is following Dao, the formation of constitution is also following Dao.  This following Dao implies the formation of constitution is under the influence of Dao.  Because of following Dao and also Dao is constantly changing, a constitution is formed and also is constantly changing.

There are two aspects to discuss the formation of constitution.  The first one we called pre-heaven and the second one called post-heaven.  The cutoff line of pre-heaven and post-heaven is the moment of inhaling of first breathes by the newborn.  During the pre-heaven, there are several factors affected the formation of constitution.  The most important one is the quality of parent’s essences.  With good quality of parent’s essences, there is a higher chance a formation of constitution can happen.  Since parent’s good qualities of essences are already following Dao, they are also passing this characteristic down to the newborn, which provides the foundation of newborn with the quality of following Dao constitution.  The formation of constitution is also affected by parent’s blood relationship with each other – the farer the better, parent’s age – too young or too old are bad, the time of conceive – in between the menstrual cycle, environmental factors – weather, climate, temperature.  After the initial formation is formed, mother’s nourishment, emotion, protection, and possible diseases also affect the development of newborn during pre-heaven.

After newborn is delivered and begins its inhales of first breathe, the formation of constitution moves into post-heaven.  During post-heaven, the one significantly affects the formation of constitution is diet.  With proper diet, a constitution can receive supplements to maintain good quality of health.  Without proper diet, a good constitution can turn into illness or turn into death.  Another important factor affects the formation of constitution is exercise.  A good exercise is the one that consumes minimum of qi to generate maximum of qi. With plenty of qi, a constitution can continue to follow the movement of Dao and exist within Dao.

Other factors include mental/emotion state, work, sex activity, and diseases.  Unstable emotion can affect qi moving within a constitution, due to stress exerting on major organs.  Over working can consume more qi than a constitution can quickly replenish, which cause a deficiency of a constitution.  Over sex activities consume more essences, which exhausts constitution.  Various diseases continue to attack constitution, which also consumes constitution.

More factors can affect the formation of constitution are aging, gender, social/economic, and geographical/environment.  There is a limit on the life span of a constitution.  All of methods to maintain quality of constitution are actually to delay the aging process.  The slower of aging means the longer of a life span.  Gender’s difference also affects the formation of a constitution.  Male is usually exhibiting more yang activities, which consumes more energy than female.  Social/economic status reflects whether supplements are available or not.  With enough supplements can avoid unnecessary stress exerting on a constitution.  Stress is the number one killer to the health.  The physical location and the environment also can comfort a constitution or harass it.

The formation of constitution is a continuing process with a limit of life span.  This formation of constitution is constantly under the challenging of Dao.  In order to survive under this challenge, the formation of constitution needs to constantly following Dao.  Following Dao means understanding Dao and going alone with Dao.  All of following Dao activities to maintain the formation of constitution is the one to ensure surviving under the Dao.

The Relationships in Five Elements Theory

According to Five Elements Theory, there are promotion relationships between the five elements, which are Water promotes Wood, Wood promotes Fire, Fire promotes Earth, Earth promotes Metal, and Metal promotes Water.  Also, there are control relationships between the five elements, which are Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood, Wood controls Earth, and Earth controls Water.  These promotion and control relationships in Five Elements Theory are also applied in TCM Constitutional Theory.

The Characteristics of Water Constitution

In TCM Constitutional Theory, a constitution of water has some characteristics.  The color is black. In regard to the adaptation to the season changes, water constitution tolerates fall and winter, but dislikes spring and summer.  People with a water constitution may carry dark skin and complexion, lots of winkles, relative big head, angular chin and jaws, high cheeks, small shoulders, big abdomen, long tailbone, and long back.

A Water Constitution case  in Clinic

In Five Yuns and Six Qis, the condition of a constitution is also being affected by the day, the month, and year of the birth.  It is because year is belonging to one of the five yuns and month and day is belonging to one of the six qis.  The type of yun and qi affects the characteristics of a constitution and the interrelationship of a constitution in Five Element Theory.

In clinic, a female patient who was born on April 22, 1981 is suffering pain on her both knees due to injury years ago.  She was stumble and hurt her knees.  The patient also stated she was one week premature with a mild abnormal lung function.  She has shallow sleep and easy to wake up at night but she can continue to fall back to sleep.  She bites her teeth during sleep. Her menstruation is normal but her skin is dark. Her appetite is good.  Her pulse is wiry and her tongue is yellow thin coating and red on tip.

According Huang Di Nei Jing, based on her birthday she is weak water in Five Yuns and is Shao Yin Jun Huo in Six Qis.  Since she is weak water and water in Five Elements is promoting wood, we assume her wood is weak too.  In TCM, wood is related with the sinews of the body and she is suffering knee problem, even though she had injured her knees before.

Water in Five Elements is controlling fire.  Since she is weak water and she is belonging to Shao Yin Jun Huo in Six Qis, it seems her fire is stronger.  Fire in Five Elements promotes earth, which relate to digestion system in the body.  She has a good appetite, red on the tip of her tongue, and sleeping problem.

With a strong fire, which controls metal in Five Elements and a generic weak lung, which is metal and metal promotes water in Five Elements; her weak water constitution seems weaker and her skin color is even darker.
